COVID-19 Information for Prospective Students

The health and safety of our community, which includes our prospective students, is our number one priority. In light of the recent spread of the COVID-19 virus, University of Western States is taking a few measures that may affect you including:

We are so excited for you to be a part of our community and look forward to meeting you in person. In the meantime, stay well!

Welcome to University of Western States (UWS)! We are glad you stopped by to learn more about us. You should know that UWS is one of the oldest institutions in North America focusing on whole-person health care. We realize that world-class health care exists because of excellent health professionals and that health care extends beyond science. Empathy, relationships and communication combined with evidence-informed approaches are required to deliver whole-person, patient-centered care. It is a progressive approach that our students — and their patients and clients — take to heart.

With a number of highly specialized degrees and certificates — including doctor of chiropractic, human nutrition and functional medicine, clinical mental health counseling, diagnostic imaging, and sport and performance psychology — UWS is helping create a new breed of health care professionals. Students never lose sight of why they chose their path: to realize the transformative power of education and training that enriches their experiences and improves the lives of their patients.

We invite you to get to know UWS — and join us on our quest to help change the face of modern health care.

About Campus

The University of Western States main campus is located in a bustling neighborhood, 15 minutes from downtown Portland and close to public transportation at 8000 NE Tillamook Street. The neighborhood, Madison South, offers a lively atmosphere and borders the neighborhoods of Sumner, Roseway, Parkrose, Cully, Montavilla and Rose City. Some landmarks and attractions near to campus include the Grotto, Rocky Butte Natural Area, Rose City Golf Course, and Madison High School – as well as many restaurants and coffee shops. The main campus is served by a TriMet bus stop adjacent to the site and a MAX Light Rail Station within one-quarter mile. It is also on the Tillamook Neighborhood Greenway bike route. University of Western States is committed to providing students with a safe environment in which to learn.

One of the best ways to get to know UWS is by visiting Portland and taking a tour of our campus. Whether you’ve already been accepted and want to spend the day with us or you’re still deciding and want to make UWS a quick stop during your west coast vacation, we are happy to schedule a personalized tour for you. Come visit! Or, take a virtual tour of the new campus with student ambassadors, Teya and Caitlin!

Wondering about housing around campus? UWS does not offer on-campus housing, however, we offer housing resources and information to assist students looking for places to live in Portland and surrounding areas near the university.

Online Learning

Our online programs are flexible and 100 percent online. No on-site visits to Portland are required (though you’re very welcome to visit!). At UWS, we strive to make the online learning experience community-driven and free of unnecessary stress. Interactive discussion forums allow students with a diverse array of educational and professional backgrounds to learn from each other, as well as from assigned readings and lectures. In addition, our weekly modular schedule means that students can log on at the times most convenient for them, rather than being required to bend their work and family schedules to meet at a predetermined hour.

tracey giambertoneMy experience with the online environment was so much better than I anticipated. I feared a lack of connection with my professors and my classmates but I was very wrong. The online system is extremely user-friendly and help is always a click away. I’ve grown with my classmates and I love learning alongside people from a variety of backgrounds.

– Tracey Giambertone, RD

marques stevensonThis is a much better online learning environment compared to my previous experience at another institution. No longer am I limited by local connections. I find that my cohorts are from all over the country and bring a wealth of knowledge and world experience to the classroom discussions.
