Content
Chronic pain affects 20-25 percent of the North American population, posing a significant burden on the healthcare system and costing billions of dollars annually. Healthcare professionals are increasingly called upon to address this challenge and alleviate the strain on federal, state, and local resources. Managing chronic pain patients can often feel overwhelming and frustrating, especially when traditional treatments fall short.
This course is designed to enhance clinical skills in assessment and treatment of persistent pain. Learners will gain the tools and confidence needed to effectively assess and treat patients with chronic pain, and apply these strategies immediately in clinical practice.
Learning Objectives
By the completion of this program, participants will:
- Analyze evidence-based guide for the comprehensive assessment chronic pain
- Utilize standard pain assessments in relation to clinical case studies
- Synthesize phenotyping of chronic pain, based on a synthesis of the current evidence
- Apply knowledge regarding the various chronic pain mechanisms & phenotypes to case examples
- Evaluate multiple psychological assessment tools in the clinic
- Implement various treatment strategies for chronic pain, including patient education, patient-led goal setting and exercise-based management
Participant Expectations
To successfully complete the program, participants are expected to participate in the following:
- In-depth case discussions and real-world patient scenarios
- Hands-on demonstrations of assessment and treatment techniques
- Strategies for immediate implementation in clinical practice
- Interactive Q&A sessions with the instructor
Speaker
Demetry Assimakopoulos, Sp. Hons. BA, DC.
Dr. Demetry Assimakopoulos graduated from The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 2012. Dr. Demetry previously worked as part of the interdisciplinary team at the University Health Network’s (UHN) Rehabilitation Pain Service (RPS). This specialized inter-disciplinary program works to manage very complex chronic pain cases as part of an integrated team, to determine the best possible clinical pathways for individual patients. Dr. Demetry was the first chiropractor to join the UHN RPS Program, and started the first Chiropractic Clinic in the hospital.
Dr. Demetry also treats chronic pain patients Pain and Wellness Centre in Maple Ontario. The Pain and Wellness Centre offers Ontario’s only government-funded interdisciplinary pain program, which offers a spectrum of treatments for chronic pain, including chiropractic services, physical rehabilitation, naturopathy, healthy eating, lifestyle counseling, psychological counselling, mindfulness and meditation, pharmacological treatment and interventional therapies. Furthermore, Dr. Demetry teaches in the Department of Graduate Studies at CMCC.
Continuing Education Information
This program will qualify for 12 hours of continuing education. While every effort to obtain credit in the following jurisdictions will be made, it is the licensees responsibility to verify that credits have been granted. UWS will update this listing with approval numbers as they are received.
- University of Western States is an approved provider of CE for Chiropractors for the Providers of Approved Continuing Education (PACE) program of the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards. States that accept courses that are approved by PACE include: AK, CT, DC, ID, IN, IA, KS, ME, MD, MA, MN, MO, MT, NE, NJ, NH, NC, ND, OH, OR, RI, SC, SD, TN, UT, VT, VA, WA, WY, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands and Nova Scotia.
- For practitioners in British Columbia, UWS will provide attendees the necessary documentation and certificate post-event to submit and claim CE credit.
Target Audience: DC Continuing Education
Chiropractors: This program, when attended in its entirety, offers 12.0 PACE CE Hours for Chiropractors. The Office of Continuing Education at The Chicago School is a PACE-approved CE provider through February 5, 2026. OCE at The Chicago School Continuing Education follows PACE criteria for quality continuing education.
