Next Steps
Coming to the U.S.? Now is the time to review and get a head start on the visa application process below.
International Admission Requirements
In addition to meeting all general and program-specific admission requirements, you must also submit the
required information below to be considered for international student admission to University of Western States.
If English is not your primary language, you must submit proof that you are able to communicate in English at a proficient level. Acceptable proof of proficiency includes:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) official score report
- Minimum scores:
- 89 on the internet-based test
- 550 on the paper-based test
- 213 on the computer-based test
- Pearson Test of English (PTE) official score report
- Minimum score: 56
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) official score report
- Minimum score: 6.5
- Duolingo English Test score report
- Minimum score: 120
Note: The language requirement does not apply if you have either earned an undergraduate or graduate degree or at least 60 credit hours from a university in which the language of instruction was English (example: American University of Cairo).
Test scores must be submitted directly from the testing agency, and you must have taken the test within the past two years.
If you hold a qualifying degree from an international institution outside the U.S. or Canada, you must have it evaluated as part of the admissions process. You will need to obtain a course-by-course evaluation, or an official equivalency may be required. The evaluation must indicate the equivalent U.S. credential and grade-point average (GPA). UWS recommends evaluations from:
The evaluation itself is not a guarantee of admission. University of Western States does not pay the cost of a credential evaluation; you are responsible for this fee.
International Student Visa Process
Visa processing time can vary by country. Preparing early ensures that you have plenty of time to complete the required steps before arriving to the U.S. Visit the U.S. Department of State for more information on the entire visa process.
Designated School Officials (DSOs) are available to support you with I-20 documentation and visa-related questions. Contact [email protected] for assistance.
F-1 Visa Sponsorship
University of Western States is authorized to issue I-20 documents for eligible on-campus international students. After you are admitted and submit required financial documentation, UWS will provide the materials needed to apply for an F-1 student visa.
If you plan to study on campus, you’ll need to meet U.S. immigration requirements and maintain F-1 student status throughout your program. Canadian students do not need an F-1 visa stamp or consular interview but must enter the U.S. in F-1 student status with an issued I-20.
After you are offered admission to an on-campus program and submit the required documentation, UWS will issue your I-20. This document is required to apply for an F-1 student visa and to enter the United States.
Your I-20 is issued by the UWS Office of Admissions and mailed to your home address once all materials are received and approved.
To receive your I-20, you must show proof of financial support equal to one academic year of expenses, including tuition, fees, books, housing, and miscellaneous costs.
Proof of financial support may be demonstrated through a combination of any of the following:
- Original bank statement or letter on official bank letterhead
- Original letter from a bank showing a line of credit
- Original scholarship award letter
- National or provincial government loan or grant documentation
- Original bank account statement from a parent or sponsor*
*Students who show proof of funding through a parent or sponsor must include a completed parent or sponsor form with notarization along with their I-20 application.
After your I-20 is issued, you are required to pay the SEVIS fee of $350 USD. This fee is paid directly to the U.S. government—not to UWS. Proof of payment is required before going to the U.S. consulate for a visa interview and is also required when crossing the border into the U.S.
Please note that Canadian international students do not need to visit a consulate for an interview or to obtain a student visa.
Once you enter the U.S. and begin your program, you are responsible for maintaining your F-1 status and I-20 documentation. Maintaining F-1 status requires:
- Full-time enrollment each quarter (at least 9 credits) and attending all classes, except during official breaks
- Completing your studies by the end date listed on your I-20 document (or requesting an extension in advance)
- Ensuring your I-20s have a valid signature once every 10-12 months
- Maintaining a valid passport
- Reporting any change of address to the International Admissions team within 10 days of moving
Failing to meet these requirements may impact your ability to remain in the U.S. or pursue future immigration benefits. You can review the full federal guidelines at Study in the States.
International Student FAQs
While UWS does not offer on-campus housing, international students have access to many nearby neighborhoods and housing options. Our Portland campus is located about 15 minutes from downtown and close to public transportation.
If needed, you can email [email protected] to request a letter of support for housing.
U.S. banks are required to verify the identity of anyone opening a bank account. Because of federal regulations, all banks operating in the U.S. follow Customer Identification Programs (CIP), which outline the documents needed to open an account.
Requirements can vary by bank, so you’re encouraged to contact the bank you plan to use for specific details. You may also want to check with your bank in your home country to see if they have affiliate or partner banks in the U.S., which can sometimes make the process easier.
If needed, you may email [email protected] to request a letter of support for banking purposes.
UWS does not require students to carry health insurance and does not provide health insurance coverage. However, it’s important to consider your health care options while studying in the U.S.
As a UWS student, you can receive free chiropractic care and discounted health care services, including diagnostic imaging and labs, through the Connected Whole Health Clinic.
Additional options and considerations:
- The International Association of Student Insurance Services (IASIS) may be a helpful resource for identifying insurance providers
- Canadian students often maintain health coverage through their province and may wish to speak with their insurance carrier about adding a rider
The State of Oregon offers on-demand health care clinics with fixed-rate services, regardless of insurance coverage; some locations also provide emergency care
If you hold a current Canadian driver’s license, it is valid for use in the United States. Students from other countries can learn more about obtaining a driver’s license through the Study in the States: Driving in the United States webpage.
If you plan to drive, you must purchase car insurance that meets the requirements of the state where you live. While driving, you should carry:
- A valid driver’s license
- Proof of insurance listing the insurance company and policy number
Vehicle registration information
If you are studying under F-1 visa status, you may be eligible to work on campus for up to 20 hours per week.
On-campus positions open to international students are listed on the Student Jobs at UWS webpage. If you are offered a position, you will need to apply for a U.S. Social Security Number (SSN). Your supervisor will work with the Office of Human Resources to help initiate this process.
Please note that it may take up to three months to receive your SSN after applying.
For additional details, you can find more information about working in the U.S. through official government resources.
Yes. All international students are required to file IRS Form 8843, even if you did not earn income in the U.S. during the year.
UWS partners with Sprintax, a nonresident tax preparation software, to help guide you through the process. As a UWS international student, you will receive an email with a Sprintax access code.
Additional information to know:
- U.S. tax forms are due by April 15 each year for the prior calendar year
- If you earn income in the U.S., you must file a federal tax return in addition to Form 8843
- Most states, including Oregon, also require a state income tax return
Instructions and forms are available through the Internal Revenue Service and the State of Oregon.
Canadian Students
Canadian students should also complete Form TL11A (Tuition, Education, and Textbook Amounts Certificate – University Outside Canada). You may request this form from the registrar’s office at [email protected].
For more information, visit the Canadian Revenue Agency website.
Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows eligible students to work in the United States for up to 12 months after graduation. You can learn more by visiting the Optional Practical Training and STEM OPT Extension webpage.
