Apply Nutrition and Functional Medicine to Your Practice
The Clinical Nutrition and Functional Medicine (CNFM) Graduate Certificate is designed for current health professionals who already hold a first professional degree and want to incorporate the philosophy and techniques of clinical nutrition and functional medicine into their professional practice.
Our CNFM Graduate Certificate program draws directly from the master’s program curriculum, providing a tightly focused exploration of clinical nutrition assessment, biochemical physiological systems, root-cause-based clinical strategies, and functional medicine foundations.
Flexible Learning Model
This program is intentionally designed for busy professionals. You can tailor your course load each quarter, choose when to join optional live sessions, and benefit from small class sizes that allow for more personalized guidance and meaningful faculty interaction.
Combined with the flexibility of the online format and the structure provided by experienced instructors, the CNFM Graduate Certificate program offers a supportive, high-engagement learning environment that integrates smoothly into your professional life.
Transition to the Master’s Program
Most coursework for the CNFM Graduate Certificate is transferrable to the M.S. in Clinical Nutrition and Functional Medicine program, giving you a head start on earning your master’s degree.
Students who continue on to the master’s program do not pay a second application fee, do not need to submit new references or letters of recommendation, nor do they need to sit for another faculty interview.

Accreditation & Licensure
Institutional Accreditation
University of Western States (UWS) is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). This accreditation ensures the university meets rigorous standards for academic quality, integrity, and continuous improvement.
Licensure & Professional Practice Considerations
The CNFM Graduate Certificate is intended for health professionals who want to strengthen their clinical skill set in nutrition and functional medicine.
Because the certificate includes only a select portion of the full graduate curriculum, it does not meet the academic requirements needed to sit for the Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS®) exam. Students seeking CNS® eligibility must complete the full Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition and Functional Medicine program.
State-by-State Regulations
Nutrition practice regulations vary significantly across the United States. Students should review the regulations for the state in which they plan to practice.
Career Outcomes
The CNFM Graduate Certificate is designed to strengthen and expand the work of already credentialed health professionals. Graduates typically integrate functional medicine principles into their existing clinical roles, supporting more comprehensive patient assessments, addressing complex or chronic cases with greater confidence, and offering more personalized nutrition-focused care.
While the certificate does not lead to licensure or eligibility for the CNS® exam, it provides advanced tools and frameworks that enhance practice for clinicians such as dietitians, nurses, chiropractors, naturopathic doctors, physician assistants, and other health practitioners.
UWS Whole Health
At University of Western States, whole health means caring for the whole person, not just the condition. This approach connects physical, mental, emotional, and environmental factors to support long-term wellness. In the Clinical Nutrition and Functional Medicine Graduate Certificate program, this philosophy comes to life through personalized nutrition, root-cause thinking, and functional medicine frameworks.
Financing Your Future
University of Western States remains committed to keeping higher education affordable and accessible. Our Financial Aid Department is ready to offer guidance and support in determining suitable financial assistance tailored to your needs, including potential scholarship opportunities, grants, and more.
