About the University

Founded in 1904, University of Western States (UWS) is the second oldest chiropractic program in the world. It has since evolved in to a leading accredited institution for an evidence-informed, science-based education, with a focus on health and wellness.

What has remained consistent is the university’s commitment to creating health sciences practitioners with a passion for patient care. The university motto “For the good of the patient” guides every aspect of the institution and enables UWS to fulfill its mission of improving the health of society through wellness-based, patient-centered care.

UWS is located in Portland, Oregon, a beautiful city situated in the progressive Pacific Northwest. This area’s collective consciousness embraces innovative approaches to health and well-being, making it the ideal locale to learn, develop and practice the preventive, conservative medicine taught at University of Western States.

Below are highlights from some of our programs.

Doctor of Chiropractic

The doctor of chiropractic program, the second oldest in the world, is a rigorous 12 academic-quarter doctoral program that can be completed in three-four years. Graduates of the chiropractic program are primary care chiropractic physicians. UWS students score well-above average on National Boards because of the high-class faculty and hands-on learning.

Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine

The human nutrition and functional medicine department houses a Master of Science degree program, a graduate certificate degree program and a Doctor of Clinical Nutrition degree program. These programs are offered as a collaborative endeavor between UWS and the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), the organization that founded and developed many functional medicine concepts in use today. They are online and clinically-oriented.

Clinical Mental Health Counseling

UWS offers a Master of Science in clinical mental health counseling. The degree is 100% online and designed for students who want to diagnose and treat those with mental health disorders as licensed counselors. As careers progress, students can become clinical supervisors and mental and behavioral health program administrators.

Sport and Performance Psychology

Using positive and applied sport psychology, our sport and performance psychology programs train students in motivation, performance enhancement and the ability to maximize human potential. The SPP programs offered include: Master of Science (MS), Doctorate of Education (EdD), and three graduate certificates. Specializations are also offered within the programs and include: positive coaching, positive leadership and administration, individual studies, and clinical mental health counseling. These options allow students to meet their specific career goals and educational needs.
