Brief BIO: Josh was born and raised in Eugene, Ore. He started taking interest in health in college. After finishing his undergrad degree he worked in the financial industry as a manager for three years. He decided to make a change and pursue his passion in health and wellness. He enrolled in the MS in human nutrition and functional medicine program at UWS in spring 2014. That fall he began his MS in exercise and sports science program. Since enrolling, he has been a full-time student pursuing both degrees. During the summer of 2015, he worked for EXOS, a corporate wellness company at Google, in Mountain View, Calif. Following this internship he went directly into working for Marathon Petroleum as their corporate wellness intern. He has a passion for helping people and making positive changes in people’s lives. He hopes to one day own his own health coaching business.

1. Why did you choose UWS? Why did you choose the HNFM and ESS online programs?

I chose UWS because I had numerous friends who had gone through the chiropractic program. They knew my interests well and told me I should check out the programs. After looking through everything, I knew it would be a good fit. Also, I had been looking for a career change and these programs give me the training I need to make that happen in the expanding and exciting field of health care.

2. What has been your favorite class/instructor?

My favorite course so far has been exercise and physiology in the ESS program. Professor Reyes was great but also the format of the class made it enjoyable. This was a very dense course and the ability to re-watch lectures and have access to the professor made it a great learning experience.

3. What has been your experience with learning in ESS/HNFM’s online environment?

It was an easy transition for me because I have taken online courses before so I know how important it was to stay on top of them. So far it has been great.

4. What has been the most surprising part of the HNFM/ESS program at UWS?

How fast the time has gone by. It seems like I just started and now I am almost done.

5. What do you hope to do after graduation?

There are a few careers that I am looking into; corporate wellness, strength and conditioning coach, or a health coach. Through my internships I got while at UWS, I have had the opportunity to work in each field so when the time comes I will see what opportunities are available. This summer I had the opportunity to work for EXOS, a corporate wellness company, at Google in Mountain View, Calif. It was an amazing experience where I was able to apply my knowledge gained in the programs at UWS. I am now the corporate wellness intern for Marathon Petroleum in Findlay, Ohio. Both of these companies are ranked as top places in the country to work. Through my studies and knowledge gained at UWS I was able to obtain these great opportunities.

6. Wild Card: Favorite way to get some stress out from school?

My favorite way to get stress out would be lifting weights. I know I can control that environment and it allows me to remove myself from whatever situation that is causing stress.
