Scholarships

Massage Therapy Scholarships

UWS Scholarships may be awarded based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA, academic merit, and/or other qualifying factors. All scholarships are applied to tuition and are open to both U.S. citizens and residents of other countries. UWS scholarships are made possible through donations and institutional funds that are administered by the Scholarship Committee. Award amounts are determined by scholarship criteria, financial need and available funds.

The scholarship application should be submitted to the Admissions Office with essays and other materials as required. At least one applicant will receive a scholarship of up to $500 in each of the scholarships listed below.

Scholarship Application Deadlines:
March 9 for spring 2012 applicants (applicants will be notified by March 21)
September 7 for fall 2012 applicants (applicants will be notified by Sept. 19)

Massage Therapy Cultural Diversity Scholarship:
To encourage applicants with diverse backgrounds or who represent an underrepresented population in the massage profession, UWS will award an incoming first quarter student with a Cultural Diversity Scholarship. Applicants should submit a scholarship application and typed response to the essay questions below. Recipients of this scholarship will be expected to participate in a campus project that promotes diversity on the UWS campus.

Essay Questions:
1. How do you see yourself as an underrepresented person in the massage profession?
2. What has been your previous involvement, at school, work or in your personal life to promote or foster diversity?
3. What type of campus activity would you plan to promote diversity on the UWS campus?

Community Service and Leadership:
Applicants who have demonstrated dedication and a positive influence through service and volunteerism in their community are encouraged to apply for the Community Service and Leadership scholarship. Applicants should submit a scholarship application and typed response to the essay questions below. Recipients of this scholarship will be expected to demonstrate service and leadership by participating in a campus project or activity related to the massage therapy program or profession.

Essay Questions:
1. Describe your leadership and community service experience and why you feel you deserve this award.
2. What are your career goals? What populations would you like to work with and what type of practice do you envision for yourself?
3. What have you done or what will you do to promote the massage field, massage research or UWS?

General Scholarship:
This scholarship is available to any incoming massage therapy student. Applicants should submit a scholarship application and typed responses to the essay questions below.

Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum 3.0 GPA in most recent academic setting or a score of 550 or better on GED exams

1. What are your career goals?
2. How will this scholarship contribute to your success in the UWS massage program

Doctor of Chiropractic Scholarships

UWS Scholarships may be awarded based on financial need as determined by the FAFSA, academic merit, and/or other qualifying factors. All scholarships are applied to tuition and are open to both U.S. citizens and residents of other countries. UWS scholarships are made possible through donations and institutional funds that are administered by the Scholarship Committee. Award amounts are determined by scholarship criteria, financial need and available funds. The scholarship application should be submitted to the Admissions Office with essays and other materials as required. At least one applicant will receive a scholarship of up to $5000 in each of the scholarships listed below.

Scholarship Application Deadlines
July 2 for Fall 2012 applicants (applicants will be notified by July 16)
October 29 for Winter 2013 applicants (applicants will be notified by November 14)  

Presidential Scholarship Program
Presidential Scholarships are awarded to exceptional Fall and Winter applicants. Scholarship recipients will be selected from the eligible applicant pool based on academic strength, outstanding extracurricular activities or leadership qualities as identified by the Scholarship Committee. Awards are subject to available funding. No application is required for the Presidential Scholarship as all admitted students will automatically receive consideration.  

Women in Chiropractic Scholarship
The field of chiropractic has disproportionately been dominated by men since its founding more than a century ago. To encourage more women to join the profession, UWS will award an incoming first quarter student with the Women in Chiropractic award. Applicants must demonstrate how they were inspired to become Chiropractic Physicians, what they hope for the future of women in the profession, and how they plan to encourage other women to become chiropractors. Award amounts are determined by scholarship criteria, financial need and available funds. The award will be distributed during the first year of study only (3 quarters) provided students maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.  

Preferred Qualifications: female student, bachelor’s degree, 3.0 minimum grade point average  

Essay Questions:
Describe how a Doctor of Chiropractic has influenced your desire to join the chiropractic profession.
What are some of the challenges facing women in chiropractic today, and what hopes do you have for the future of the profession to overcome these hurdles?
How will you encourage other women to become chiropractors?

Cultural Diversity Scholarship
In hopes of promoting diversity on campus, UWS encourages multi-ethnic and minority students to apply for the Cultural Diversity Scholarship. Applicants must demonstrate their commitment to fostering diversity within the UWS community and explain how they intend to continue that tradition within their own practice upon graduation. Award amounts are determined by scholarship criteria, financial need and available funds. The award will be distributed during the first year of study only (3 quarters) provided students maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.  

Preferred Qualifications: Culturally diverse or minority background, bachelor’s degree, 3.0 minimum grade point average  

Essay Questions:
Describe your experience working with issues of diversity as an undergraduate, and explain how that experience has affected you on a personal level. 
Describe how you plan to foster diversity on the UWS campus.
Describe how you intend to continue your work supporting underrepresented groups as a UWS graduate.

Career Change Scholarship
Applicants who are making a career change to pursue the Doctor of Chiropractic degree are encouraged to apply for the Career Change Scholarship. Applicants must submit an essay reflecting on their professional experience in their former field and outline what has inspired them to embark on a career in chiropractic. Award amounts are determined by scholarship criteria, financial need and available funds. The award will be distributed during the first year of study only (3 quarters) provided students maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher.  

Preferred Qualifications: Admitted students changing careers to become a Doctor of Chiropractic, bachelor’s degree, 3.0 minimum grade point average  

Essay Question:
Please reflect on your professional experience working in your former field, and describe what has inspired you to embark on a career in chiropractic.
